Fun Things to Do in Wilmington, North Carolina — A Local’s Guide

By Jody Carmichael, Founder of Dwellia · Airbnb Management in North Carolina · Coastal NC

Wilmington, North Carolina doesn’t get nearly enough credit. It’s got beaches, history, incredible food, live music, ghost stories, and one of the most beautiful riverfronts on the East Coast — and most visitors only scratch the surface.

I’ve been living and working in Wilmington for over two decades, and I still find new reasons to love it. As someone who manages vacation rentals here, I get to watch guests fall in love with this city every season — and I’ve learned which experiences make a trip truly memorable versus which ones get skipped.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, a family vacation, or you’re just starting to explore the idea of visiting — here’s my honest, local’s guide to the fun things to do in Wilmington, North Carolina.

01. Spend a Day Downtown on the Riverwalk

If you do nothing else in Wilmington, spend a full day downtown. The historic district is genuinely one of the most charming urban neighborhoods in the South — tree-lined streets, beautifully preserved architecture, and a riverfront that pulls you in the moment you arrive.

The Wilmington Riverwalk stretches along the Cape Fear River and is lined with some of the best Wilmington, North Carolina downtown restaurants, boutique shops, art galleries, and breweries you’ll find anywhere in the region. It’s the kind of place where a quick afternoon stroll turns into a full evening without you even noticing.

For Wilmington, North Carolina food lovers, the downtown dining scene punches well above its weight. From farm-to-table spots to fresh coastal seafood to craft cocktail bars — you could eat here for a month and never repeat a meal. And the brewery scene is thriving: several local craft breweries are within easy walking distance of each other, making it a natural crawl for beer lovers.

When it comes to Wilmington, North Carolina bars, The Eagles Dare is one of those places that instantly feels like a local secret worth sharing. A craft cocktail bar and beer garden with real personality — their motto says it all: those who dare, win. The space is relaxed, unpretentious, and exactly the kind of spot you want to stumble onto when you’re exploring downtown for the first time.

What makes The Eagles Dare truly special is Free Concert Fridays — a free all-summer concert series that brings live music, great drinks, and the best of the Wilmington community together in one place. If your visit falls on a Friday evening between spring and fall, this is where you want to be. It’s one of those only-in-Wilmington experiences that turns a good trip into a great one.

02. Airlie Gardens — Breathtaking Any Time of Year

Airlie Gardens is one of Wilmington’s most beloved landmarks — and if you haven’t been, it needs to go straight to the top of your list. This 67-acre coastal garden sits just outside downtown and features centuries-old live oaks draped in Spanish moss, a freshwater lake, sculpted gardens, and seasonal blooms that change with every visit.

It’s the kind of place that slows you down in the best possible way. Whether you’re exploring solo, with a partner, or with family, Airlie Gardens offers a genuinely peaceful counterpoint to the energy of the beach and the city. Spring is spectacular when the azaleas are in bloom, but it’s honestly beautiful year-round.

Plan for at least two hours — you’ll want to wander, and you’ll want your camera.

03. Cameron Art Museum & Children’s Museum — Culture for Every Kind of Visitor

Wilmington’s art scene is more vibrant than most visitors expect — and Cameron Art Museum is the crown jewel of it. This beautifully designed contemporary art museum sits on a stunning 9-acre campus just south of downtown and houses a permanent collection that spans American art from the 18th century to today, alongside rotating exhibitions that give you a reason to come back every visit. The building itself is worth the visit, the grounds are peaceful and walkable, and the café makes it an easy place to spend a full morning or afternoon. It’s also one of the more unique date spots in Wilmington — especially on evenings when they host special events, live music, or exhibition openings.

Traveling with kids? The Children’s Museum of Wilmington is right downtown and keeps little ones genuinely engaged with hands-on, interactive exhibits that go well beyond anything you’d expect from a city this size. Pair it with lunch at one of the nearby family-friendly restaurants and a walk along the Riverwalk and you’ve got a perfect half-day that works for everyone.

Between the two, there’s something for every kind of visitor — whether you’re on a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or somewhere in between.

04. Carriage Tours — History the Beautiful Way

One of the most charming ways to see downtown Wilmington is by carriage. The horse-drawn carriage tours that wind through the historic district are a staple for a reason — they’re leisurely, scenic, and genuinely informative. Your guide will walk you through the city’s rich history, point out architectural details you’d walk right past on foot, and give you a feel for the neighborhood that no map app can replicate.

It’s a great option for couples, for guests who are visiting for the first time, or for anyone who wants to get oriented before diving deeper into the city. And it photographs beautifully — the oak canopy over the historic streets is something else entirely from a carriage seat.

05. Ghost Tours — Wilmington After Dark

Wilmington is one of the oldest cities in North Carolina, and with that age comes history — and more than a few ghost stories. The downtown ghost tours are a genuinely fun evening activity that works for almost any group: couples, friends, families with older kids, bachelorette parties. The guides are theatrical, the stories are well-researched, and walking the dimly lit streets of the historic district at night has its own distinct atmosphere.

Even if you’re skeptical of the supernatural, the tours are worth it purely for the history and the storytelling. You’ll leave knowing things about this city that most visitors never find out.

06. Greenfield Lake Amphitheatre — Live Music on the Water

If there’s a show happening at Greenfield Lake Amphitheatre during your visit, go. The outdoor venue sits on the edge of a stunning cypress lake just south of downtown, and the setting alone is worth the ticket. Seeing live music here on a warm evening — with the lake reflecting the stage lights and the Spanish moss swaying overhead — is one of those experiences that stays with you.

Check the calendar when you’re planning your trip. The summer and fall seasons bring a solid lineup of regional and national acts, and the intimate size of the venue means there’s genuinely not a bad seat in the house.

07. Hit the Beaches — Because You’re This Close

Wilmington sits at the center of some of the most beautiful beaches in North Carolina — and they’re all within easy reach. Whether you’re drawn to the lively energy of Carolina Beach, the pristine beauty of Wrightsville Beach, or the quieter, more natural stretch of Kure Beach, you’re never more than 20 minutes from the water.

Wrightsville Beach is the local favorite — consistently clean, walkable, and genuinely stunning. It’s one of the top beaches in Wilmington, North Carolina for a reason: calm waters, a charming village, and the kind of backdrop that makes every photo look effortless. For families, Carolina Beach is ideal — more casual, great for kids, and close to the boardwalk. And for anyone wanting to escape the crowds, Kure Beach offers some of the most unspoiled coastline in the state.
